Posts: 83 (August 2, 2009 12:52 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None I have a Vaio laptop vgn-ns235j running vista home premium and am having enormous difficulties using vista. i am finally able to do some things then problems appear out of nowhere and i spend hours trying to figure out what happened and how to fix it. i am trying to set up file sharing between a vaio desktop running xp media center edition and the laptop. I have read documents all of which say it is so easy and so far all i have done is mess up. Can anyone tell me exactly how to do this step by step? I would appreciate any help. Thanks much. rugbyfan1

A: Make sure you have no blank passwords, I know that sounds odd, but make sure all accounts have passwords, and guest is off B: It helps if the user account you use on both machines has the same name and same password, this will take advantage of a security loophole and it treats any account accessing it, even from another machine, as the same account on it locally, especially if they match. C: be sure you know the names of BOTH machines so you can go to Start Button > Run > \\otherpcname D: Share the folder, let everyone modify it. Items that will make this all but impossible to figure out? 3rd party "internet security suites" such as Norton Internet Security, etc, 3rd party firewalls, you just don't need them, get rid of them, you need a hardware firewall between your network and the outside world, you do NOT need a firewall on every PC protecting it from your other PCs Diane Last Edited By: dianebrat August 3, 2009 8:06 PM. My laptop claims that the test folder is shared. Where do I look for it on my ( XP) desktop? It is not is shared folders or documents or anything that I can find. How do I access it on the desktop? The workgroup names are the same on both machines. So are the user account names and passwords. The problem seems to lie in vista which I am still trying to figure out. System information on the laptop indicates that file sharing is on, but system properties say it is not. Please help me get t his configured. Thanks much. rugbyfan1

Posts: 2204 (August 3, 2009 8:05 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	There's nothing Vista-specific in file sharing, in fact the Windows help files are pretty good as are the Microsoft.com help sites. To see any other machines shared resources you click the start button, (typo in my last post, now fixed) then if you're using classic menus you will see the Run command, where you enter \\otherpcname If new style start menus, then in the search box, type \\otherpcname It's that simple, and you really should do some additional searching on sharing files via google and the Microsoft site and it's walk-throughs, these aren't things that should be that difficult to learn. It's one thing to need to explain hidden features, but Microsoft has done a great deal of work to give you the resources both in the OS and on their websites to help you with file sharing. I'm sure on your trek to learn, you'll get a ton of useful and helpful things that will stay with you for a long time. Diane

I tried using the RUN command and found that it works fine on the laptop (running vista). I can see both the desktop and the laptop. However, when I try on the desktop (running xp) I can access that computer, but nothing happens when I try to access the laptop. I can find SOME of the shared files in My Network Places, but not all. Any thoughts on why the desktop won't access the laptop, but the laptop will access the desktop? Thanks much. rugbyfan1

Unfortunately the answer is that you need to do more research about how file sharing works (or doesn't), there's no magic bullet to solve this, you have to walk through the setup on the machine that does not show properly. I apologize for not responding sooner - I was out of town. It turns out that \\otherpc does work on my desktop - just on its own schedule. The screen pops in after 5 minutes or more or less apparently depending on the computers mood. It may have something to do with what the laptop is doing - powering down, shutting off or similar, but I am not sure about that yet. At least file sharing works well enough for my purposes.
