The Original Mad mardigan seems to be saying that he is trying all sorts of codecs not designed to be output thru the firewire. He talks about everything EXCEPT DV (using the "Sony software DV codec"). He needs to select ONLY the Sony DV software codec to render *.avi files which can be output by Firewire. He needs to examine a captured file by right-clicking on one of them and selecting "properties" to see the EXACT form they were captured in, and EXACTLY duplicate that form to render the edited files.

Disable 4:3 aspect ratio, then set frame size to 720 x 480, rather than 640 x 480 (which Premiere defaults to if 4:3 aspect ratio is enabled).

Audio is best left at 32 Khz, 16 bit stereo, no compression, interleave at "1 frame".

These, and possibly other settings should be found when checking "properties" as above.

When you try to "make movie" in Premiere 4.2, or "export movie" in 5.1c, if you get an error message, it probably means that one or more of your settings for rendering in not consistent with the DV format. Once you find the problem, Premiere should render it out fine. Remember, these older versions of Premiere and (I think) DVGate are limited to 2 gig files, so you must render no more than about 9 minutes of video in each "make movie" operation.

Once you have all your 2 gig files successfully rendered out, open DVGate, import all your 2 gig (or less) files in chronological order, select DV output (rather than capture) and click on "start", or whatever, (I don't remember exactly, as I am not at my Sony). This assumes your camcorder is connected and set to record/pause. DVGate will export all the files, seamlessly in the order you have set up, until it reaches the end of the files, or the end of the tape, whichever occurs first :-).

Using DVGate Assemble in the same fashion, all clips added in chronological order, all selected, and mpeg-1 (or mpeg-2, for those versions which offer this option, such as 2.1) selected as the output format, and Assemble will create a single mpeg file from the multiple *.avi files.
