The model I am using just came out about two months ago. Unfortunately it did not come with recovery cds and I had to create my own which ammounted to a total of 8 cds. I tried to look through them and figure out a way to understand how each works but with no avail. What I am thinking that my problem is that there is a leakage of memory. I was wondering if anybody knows where I can find a new version of

"Sony Shared Library" and "Sony Utilities"

I have recovery cds but I wasnt able to unpack the items using kpac or whatever its name was. The CD with the image seemed to be CD4. I think that the memory leakage is due to the Sony shared library or Sony Utilities dll. When I installed powerpanel I experienced the same memory leakage.

Ok people I have finally been able to create 2 cds with every program and driver needed for this laptop.

Here is how I did it.

This is kind of hard to explain but here it goes. This will work for Sony PCG FRV25 and most likely Sony PCG FRV27

1. There is a 4.8GB drive that is hidden from you that has a copy of all 7 recovery cds on it.

2. Using the search feature on Windows look for vaio recovery (I dont know exactly where this is located or what its exact name is, but it shouldnt be hard to locate). In it, it has close to 8 or 9 files which with one of them you begin the recovery wizard.

Copy this folder on to a cd. Dont forget to create a copy of all your files, etc. because you will be doing a full format.

3. Install Windows XP Pro and partition the drives to your liking but do not touch the 4.8GB drive that has the recovery cd's on it.

4. Copy the recovery wizard folder that you created in part 2 to the C:\ drive. Dont worry where to put it.

5. Click on one of the files that begins the recovery wizard. You are suppose to get a alert saying that to continue the recovery wizard you need to restart your computer.

6. Once you restart your computer, if you go to My Computer you will see the 4.8GB harddrive. Right click on the drive and select "explore". There you will find two files that end with ".pac" and begin with "sony" or "sny".

Create a folder named Sony in your C: drive. (C:\Sony\) Copy these two files (they are large > 500mb) to your C:\Sony. Rename the two files to sony1 and sony2.

Again go to the 4.8GB drive and copy the file:
appinfo to the same directory

Then you must use the kcap program found here:

myplc.com/sony/bin/kcap.zip

One you download this program unzip it to C:\Sony\.

go to Start->Run and type cmd

One you are on the command prompt type "cd.." twice until you get to the root (C:\). Then type cd Sony

then type: kcap sony.pac c:\sony

you should have something like this
c:\sony>kcap sony1.pac c:\sony

and then
c:\sony>kcap sony1.pac c:\sony

Wait until all the files have been decompressed to the C:\Sony folder. This might take a minute or two.

Now that you have these files burn them on two cds. (total size should be something like 750, 800mbs.

7. If you are like me you want to do another format and delete the 4.8 partition and then split the drives to exactly the size that you want. Reinstall Windows XP Pro fresh.

8. Install the drivers found at Sony's Support site;

ciscdb.sel.sony.com/cgi-b...oftware.pl

The following drivers are needed:

ATI Graphics, Network Card, Modem, Alps touchpad, Soundcard.

9. Copy the two cds to a drive on your computer. Using the device manager install the memory stick drivers from:

C:\Sony\0310615.snd\drivers\stick\ where sony is the directory where you copied the two cds to.

10. go to windowsupdate from microsoft and install sp1. Restart your computer and you should see that the usb drivers are being installed.

11. Using the "appinfo" file you can find out what each folder in the C:\Sony drive contains. Install these in order.

Sony Utilities Library - C:\Sony\0308601.snc\setup.exe
Sony Shared Library - C:\Sony\0207001.snc\setup.exe
Sony Notebook Setup - C:\Sony\0308306.snc\setup.exe
VAIO Support Agent (optional) - C:\Sony\0310101.suc\setup.exe
HotKey Utility - C:\Sony\0307614.snc\setup.exe
Memory Stick Formatter - C:\Sony\0305502.snc\setup.exe
PxEngine - C:\Sony\0306201.ver\pxinstall.exe

You can find the rest of the descriptions in appinfo.

Restart your computer and install the latest updates from windowsupdate. Restart your computer and you should have the latest windows updates and all the original files and drivers from Sony.

Whatever questions you have ask and I will reply.

You will need to unzip these folders using winzip:
www.winzip.com or winrar: www.winrar.com or whatever program that you have to unzip stuff.

Ok one more thing that I wanted to tell you guys is that I called Sony today and told them about the problem people are having with creating recovery cds. He said he will have one shipped to me today for free.

I guess you guys cant take advantage of these files because it seems that linking to them is not allowed. Anyways if anybody needs them follow the instructions in one of my first posts and you should be able to get the files yourself. I will see if I am allowed to post these links by checking the copyright stuff on the software.

I will contact Sony tomorrow and see if they allow me to post the drivers, sony shared library, sony utilities dll, memory stick formatter, and the hotkey utility link here. I looked through all the files and there isnt anything about copyright or distribution policy on these so it shouldnt be a problem. But you never know what these corporations might do.
